Who is a Fullstack Software Engineer? Does a developer prefer working with code than with people? Should a programmer be creative? Łukasz Antosiewicz, a Lead Fullstack Software Engineer at Hicron Software House, tells us all about it.

Your position is Lead Fullstack Software Engineer. What is your role in a software project?

My role in the project is related to taking care of development works, including:

  • conducting meetings with developers,
  • maintaining code consistency,
  • supervising architecture,
  • adhering to good programming practices,
  • supplying fresh ideas
  • and onboarding new people.

In addition, there are some of my duties, which include cooperation with the client, meeting weekly with them, consulting what they need and how it can be done. I am also working on the appraisal of new projects’ plans and client inquiries.

What is your role in the team?

My duties include working on the current development project, reviewing the code, making – with the team – decisions on architecture and solutions, and helping in growing the competencies of individual people.

To achieve the triple perspective of working in the team, I also talked to Paulina, the Agile Delivery Leader, and Maciej, the Quality Assurance Engineer. How do your roles intersect in the project?

At this moment, we are working on different projects.

However, when it comes to roles, and not specific people, I certainly work a lot with ADL, with whom we determine how to meet the client’s requirements. Together we also discuss new solutions, watch over the backlog and check if we can or must provide individual elements for the solution.

In the case of QAs, we cooperate on the automatic and manual tests in the project. Our cooperation is more limited than with ADL. Nevertheless, we focus on tasks such as establishing a common approach to testing a product and its individual components. We are working on the whole concept and vision of testing.

Stereotypically, you become a programmer because you prefer to spend time with code than with people. As a lead, you have responsibilities that go beyond programming. Do you value the part concerning team management in your duties?

I like both parts. Sometimes, when deadlines are coming, you have to code much more and it doesn’t bother me. But contact with people and the exchange of knowledge between us is a very interesting experience. This adds a lot of value to my work.

We go beyond stereotypes. We are an open team and we like working together. We organize consultations, we program in pairs or groups of several people. We share knowledge and insights.

What also increases the developer’s contribution to projects, is a broader view and embedding the code effect in business. I can also see it in my work when, together with the team, we organize, for example, event storming and work out solutions together.

In my opinion, such solitary code tapping can lead to a limited perspective. It’s good to consult your ideas sometimes and see how someone else could do your job.

Are developers creative?

Yes! Fortunately, a developing trend allows us to decide what and how we will code to accomplish a given task. In my opinion, it also has a lot to do with moving away from a flat structure in organizations and moving to more agile methods. Developers not only go through ready-made specifications. Instead of recreational activities and discouraging stagnation, at Hicron Software House we can be creative. This is a big advantage of my job.

The IT system supporting the work of retail outlets is the foundation of our business. The ability to optimize and adapt it to the needs of all entities in the PSA Group is of strategic importance and we consider it a step into the future. This project is a huge challenge: not only for us in terms of organization, but also for our partners – including Hicron – in terms of adapting the system to the needs and business models of PSA. Cooperation with Hicron consultants, taking into account their competences in the field of programming and processes specific to the automotive sector, gave us many reasons to be satisfied.
